Often a u-joint can be eliminated by using a 2" straight extension, call a coupler, to extend either the steering box, rack & pinion shaft or the column shaft.  The coupler can be welded and/or pinned to the unslpined end of a shaft.  This coupler from Borgeson couples 3/4" smooth x 5/8"-36 spline.
